I Like This Poem: A Collection of Best-loved Poems Chosen by Children for Other Children in Aid of the International Year of the Child

Description

I LIke This Poem is a classic collection of children's poems from Puffin Books. Highwaymen and naughty children, sharks and baboons, the Snitterjipe and the Jabberwocky, all have their part to play. Each and every poem in this treasure chest of family favourites was chosen by a child for other children. With poems from William Wordsworth and Christina Rosetti to Roald Dahl and Michael Rosen, there really is something for everyone. Classics to savour and new favourites to discover! This is a classic anthology to treasure forever. Kaye Webb became Editor of Puffin Books in 1961. During the 1960s and 1970s her instinct and flair resulted in the addition of many outstanding titles to the Puffin list, and in 1967 she launched the highly successful Puffin Club, now the Puffin Book Club. She was widely known for her remarkable contribution to children's books, and was awarded the MBE in 1974. She retired from Puffin 1979, but continued her involvement with children's books. Kaye Webb died in January 1996.

When Darren Bennett meets Eric Lederer, there's an instant connection. They share a love of drawing, the bottom rung on the cruel high school social ladder and a pathological fear of girls. Then Eric reveals a secret: He doesn't sleep. Ever. When word leaks out about Eric's condition, he and Darren find themselves on the run. Is it the government trying to tap into Eric's mind, or something far darker? It could be that not sleeping is only part of what Eric's capable of, and the truth is both better and worse than they could ever imagine. Amelia's sister Cleo gives her a new notebook as a tenth birthday present, and Amelia I Like This Poem: A Collection of Best-loved Poems Chosen by Children for Other Children in Aid of the International Year of the Child free ebook can't wait to fill it with all her secret thoughts and drawings. But when her best friend Leah wants to read her notebook, Amelia is torn: Sometimes secrets are better when shared with friends, but other secrets are private. How can Amelia keep her friend from feeling left out while still saving some secrets for herself?

The final illustration presents a satisfied-looking boy surrounded by a lush, bird-filled flower garden....A concluding page of gardening suggestions serves as a springboard to books with more specific guidelines."--Horn Book. Now Sarah suffers the heartbreak of losing a patient-but not from natural causes. However, once they have learnt everything Batman: A Death in the Family free pdf they can from them, the next step is reading and understanding older documents. John Holloway: Change the World without Taking Power: The Meaning of Revolution Today

Change the World without Taking Power: The Meaning of Revolution Today

Description

This new edition of John Holloway's contemporary classic, Change the World Without Taking Power, includes an extensive new preface by the author. The wave of political demonstrations since the Battle of Seattle in 2001 have crystallised a new trend in left-wing politics. Modern protest movements are grounding their actions in both Marxism and Anarchism, fighting for radical social change in terms that have nothing to do with the taking of state power. This is in clear opposition to the traditional Marxist theory of revolution which centres on the overthrow of government. In this book, John Holloway asks how we can reformulate our understanding of revolution as the struggle against power, not for power. After a century of failed attempts by revolutionary and reformist movements to bring about radical social change, the concept of revolution itself is in crisis. John Holloway opens up the theoretical debate, reposing some of the basic concepts of Marxism in a critical development of the subversive Marxist tradition represented by Adorno, Bloch and Lukacs, amongst others, and grounded in a rethinking of Marx's concept of 'fetishisation'-- how doing is transformed into being.

The second book in the Marked Men series from Jay Crownover - it's what's on the inside that counts...Doesn't every good girl want to tame the bad boy? Ayden Cross is a good Southern girl, from the tips of her cowboy boots to the depths of her country music soul. With a troubled childhood behind her, all she wants is a life laid out on the straight and narrow - and a bad boy like Jet is definitely not in the plan. So what happens when Anastasia Again! pdf the bad boy picks you? Jet Keller is used to getting everything he wants - from a recording contract with his rock band, to groupies fawning over him every night. But when he meets Ayden, he realises that wanting someone isn't enough - can he convince her that need is bigger than want? The original Curious George, which has been in print for more than fifty years, is now available in an oversized format, perfect for group sharing and reading aloud. Every child will be able to see George's impish antics when his big picture book is used during storytime.

How to Make Yourself Happy and Remarkably Less Disturbed

Description

Each of us has healthy, constructive and creative tendencies, but unfortunately, we also have their unhealthy, destructive counterparts. These self-defeating tendencies, moreover, are usually powerful and frequent. Ellis shows precisely what our natural constructive inclinations are and how to use them to overcome harmful leanings. See how to: defeat inherited and acquired tendencies to become severely anxious, depressed, enraged, self-hating, and/or self-pitying; change thoughts, feelings, and actions that lead to disturbances in order to make yourself considerably less upset and less self-defeating; persistently and strongly keep using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) methods until they become automatic and habitual, thereby making yourself less disturbable even when adversities occur in life.

But little does she realize that she will act as a catalyst in all of their lives. How a fearful thought translates into physiological changes that predispose us to illnessHow to tell true fear (the kind that arises from a genuine threat) from false fear (which triggers stress responses that undermine health)How to tune in to the voice of courage inside--our "Inner Pilot Light"How to reshape our relationship to uncertainty so that it's no longer something to dread, but a doorway to new possibilitiesWhat our fears can teach us about who we really are At the intersection of The Last Ship download book science and spirituality, The Fear Cure identifies the Four Fearful Assumptions that lie at the root of all fears--from the sense that we're alone in the universe to the belief that we can't handle losing what we love--and shifts them into Four Courage-Cultivating Truths that pave our way to not only physical well-being, but profound awakening. Using exercises from a wide range of mind-body practices and spiritual traditions, Dr. Rankin teaches us how to map our own courage-cultivating journey, write a personalized Prescription for Courage, and step into a more authentic life.

Markos Vamvakaris : The Man and the Bouzouki. Autobiography

Description

Markos Vamvakaris, born in 1905 in Syros was a pioneer of rebetiko, the urban folk music of Greece. The bouzouki was a disreputable instrument but he paved its path to glory. He spent many years, first as a stevedore in the port of Piraeus and then as a butcher in the slaughterhouse. During this time he fell in love with a tigress, his first wife, he learnt to smoke hashish and to play the 'sacred' instrument: 'I had a great passion. My life was all bouzouki. It took me over - but it also took me up in the world, way up ...' This is the first ever translation into English of the autobiography compiled by Angeliki Vellou Keil in 1972. It opens a window onto a time of extraordinary creativity in the history of Greek music, an explosion of songwriting in the interwar period. Its composers wrote about themselves and each other, the rituals of hashish smoking and the landmarks of a now vanished city. Markos the repentant sinner and living legend, looks back at childhood idylls in Syros, the arrival of the Asia Minor refugees, the terrible years of the Nazi Occupation, the ceaseless love affairs and disappointments, and the triumphs of the bouzouki. He offers a rare insight into the lives of toiling workers and the lowlife of one of the world's most ancient ports, where East meets West. Out of this melting pot he produced the classic songs that Greeks of all ages still love and know by heart.

Doctor of Truth : The Life of David R. Hawkins

Description

Who is the man behind the best-selling Power vs. Force: The Determinants of Human Behavior and the Map of Consciousness? From fundamentalism to atheism, psychoanalysis to Zen Buddhism, the pits of hell to the infinite presence of God, Dr. David R. Hawkins has dedicated his life to the pursuit of Truth, spending over fifty years as a psychiatrist before becoming a spiritual teacher after the publication of Power vs. Force. As a psychiatrist, Hawkins helped pioneer a new field of psychiatry, running one of the largest clinics in the United States and treating thousands of hopeless cases of schizophrenia, alcoholism, and drug addiction. He worked closely with some of the worlds leading minds, including two-time Nobel laureate Linus Pauling; famed psychiatrists Abram Hoffer and Humphrey Osmund; and the charismatic co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, Bill Wilson. Doctor of Truth explores what kind of life Hawkins led, who influenced his development, and what experiences shaped his understanding of the world around him, as well as the influences that informed his Map of Consciousness and the writing of Power vs. Force.

J. R. R. Tolkien,: Peoples of Middle Earth

Peoples of Middle Earth

Description

When in 1937 J. R. R. Tolkien laid aside The Silmarillion, the extension of his original mythology into later Ages of the world had scarcely emerged. Tolkien himself noted that he knew nothing of the peoples and history of these Ages until he "met them on the way".It was in the appendices to The Lord of the Rings that there emerged a comprehensive historical structure and chronology of the Second and Third Ages, embracing all the diverse strands that came together in The War of the Ring. Tolkien's difficulty - bordering on despair - in providing these appendices, leading to delay in the publication of The Return of the King, is well known. In The Peoples of Middle-earth, however, Christopher Tolkien shows that the work had in fact been achieved years before, in essays and records differing greatly from the published forms.A number of other writings by J. R. R. Tolkien are also included in this book; they derive chiefly from his last years, when new insights and constructions freely arose as he pondered the history that he had created.

It is also a primer on Tuscany--its charms and its culture. Structured around a typical Tuscan year, Dario takes us through the sights, smells, and sounds of Chianti during each of the twelve months, including the festivities and pageantry that accord with the season, most notable the Palio-the bareback horse race that consumes Peoples of Middle Earth download epub the social energies of the people of Siena for all of July and August. Dario also intersperses an account of his own life and times-that of a transplanted British "little lord" who learns to love the wilds of Chianti; of his discovery and adoption of abandoned peasant farmhouses; of his apprenticeship in the wine industry; and of his arduous transformation from bohemian layabout to thriving Tuscan guide. But the bulk of the book is devoted, with humor and affection, to the Americans he has met-the vain, the silly, the ignorant, the ambitious, the horny, the condescending, the charming, and the outright pathological. Some of them have made his life hell and live in his nightmares; others became lifelong friends.

Jane Jacobs,: Systems of Survival

Systems of Survival

Description

With intelligence and clarity of observation, the author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities addresses the moral values that underpin working life. In Systems of Survival, Jane Jacobs identifies two distinct moral syndromes--one governing commerce, the other, politics--and explores what happens when these two syndromes collide. She looks at business fraud and criminal enterprise, government's overextended subsidies to agriculture, and transit police who abuse the system the are supposed to enforce, and asks us to consider instances in which snobbery is a virtue and industry a vice. In this work of profound insight and elegance, Jacobs gives us a new way of seeing all our public transactions and encourages us towards the best use of our natural inclinations.
